Black Cats Are Believed To Offer Protection at Sea
Although not as common nowadays, British and Irish sailors back in the day would often adopt black cats to serve as their ship cats before setting sail. These dark felines were believed to offer them safe passage across the high seas. Another reason that black cats often found themselves aboard ships with sailors for months on end? Well, because they made great companions and were appreciated especially during lonely times.
Black Cats Equal Good Luck
Obviously, there have been superstitions surrounding black cats since humans started cohabitating with them. Naysayers who believe the hype surrounding black cats will often think of them as unlucky. And since black cats are also harder to photograph, this explains why they are sometimes harder to get adopted out from rescues and shelters.
But the truth is, that many cultures believe that black cats are a symbol of good luck. Outside of the United States, black cats are often viewed as symbols of good luck, which is true for Japan, Egypt, and France. In fact, in Japan, if a black cat crosses a person’s path, they will say “konnichiwa” to them. By doing so, they believe their good energy will radiate into their own life.
